The Sheffield Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) service is a tertiary referral centre providing specialist IBD care to people with Ulcerative Colitis or Crohn’s disease from the Yorkshire region and surrounding areas. As one of the largest in the United Kingdom, the service has been providing comprehensive, state of the art care for patients with ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease since the 1960s.
IBD care in Sheffield is delivered by a team of specialist consultant gastroenterologists and IBD nurse specialists supported by dedicated administrative staff. We were one of the first centres in the country to appoint an IBD nurse specialist in 1998. This has developed to a team of seven nurse specialists in 2020.
We are committed to providing care that encompasses the most recent advances in treatment and to understand the individual needs and aspirations of the people we treat. Medical and nursing members of the IBD team have contributed to setting standards of care, with the National Institute for Care Excellence (NICE) and British Society of Gastroenterology.
The IBD multidisciplinary team includes close working links with our colorectal surgical team which has extensive experience in IBD surgery. We also established one of the first Transition services for young people with IBD transferring to adult services from Sheffield Children’s Hospital.
